Adding Inline Comments
Wednesday, June 9th, 2004

This article is aimed at people converting from an old version of dominoblog which has popup comments and wish to move to using inline comments. Although it can also be used as information on how inline comments are implemented in the pre prepared templates etc should you be building a database from scratch.

The first thing to do to get started is to copy a document from the dominoblog template database into your existing database. This document can be located under Templates and within the Comment List View (Its called the "Bluefade Comment List Template"). When pasted into your database you can rename it if you wish - and later on maybe change the layout html to your taste.

Once that is done you will need to go to the Documents view again in the templates section and copy and paste your existing Document template. Edit this template and rename to say "Inline Comments Template".

Whilst in your new template ("Inline Comments Template") remove any tags that are <$DXReadComment$> or <$DXAddComment$>. Then add a tag "<$DXInlineComments$>" where you want the inline comments to be displayed (generally underneath the content).

Then also add a tag "<$DXCommentForm$>" where you would like a form to appear for adding comments (generally underneath the comment list).

Save and close this template.

The next thing you need to do is edit your "Content List" template - goto the relevant view under the template section and edit this document. Remove any <$DXReadComment$> and/or <$DXAddComment$> tags and replace with <$DXInlineCommentLink$>. Should you wish to show a comment count then also add <$DXCommentCount$> and perhaps surround it with brackets for visual effect. Save and close this document.

Finally we need to change some settings in the configuration document>

>
Templates Tab - Default Inline Comments Document Template (4th dropdown) - Select the new inline template we created.

>
Templates Tab - Default Comment List Template (Content Document) - 8th dropdown - Select the comment list template we created.

>
Archiving Tab - Previous Comments Sub Tab - "Link to Popup or Inline Document or Comment" - set to "Inline" - see image below.

Save and close your configuration document and view your site - and inline comments should be fully working for you - you will just need to tailor the html in the templates we created to your taste/requirements.

Any issues or help required - just contact me. There is also a follow up document on how to tailor the Inline add comment form.
