Using Thumbnail Images in your Content
Thursday, July 22nd, 2004

Before you can follow these instructions you need to have followed the document entitled "Automatic Thumbnails".

There are many ways of using images in your content documents - using the rich text "Import Image" option - hardcoding html IMG tags to point to an external image or an image that you have imported into your database - and there is now another option within the content document entitled "Attach Image from Directory".

By using this option the attached image is "associated" with the document and can then be manipulated using some new image tags:
  • <$ DXImage$> - Can be used in a Content List template or directly in your content - places the Image you have assigned to your content document.
  • <$ DXThumbnail$> - Can be used in a Content List template or directly in your content - places a thumbnail (jpg only) of the Image you have assigned to your content document.
  • - Can be used in a Content List template or directly in your content - places the Image you have assigned to your content document and is a link to the document.
  • - Can be used in a Content List template or directly in your content - places a thumbnail (jpg only) of the Image you have assigned to your content document and is also a link to the document.

There is also the ability to change this image or directly select an image from the list of images that you already have in the database. You do this by going to the miscellaneous tab within your document and using the "Attached Image Name" dropdown.

So by assigning images to documents firstly we can manipulate them - so options open up for things like photo blogs, galleries etc - but also the images are served up quicker by the server compared to images that are imported into Rich Text which then are retrieved by a Domino server command ?openelement - which can strain the server.

In addition we can categorise images (a seperate document on this will be available) and reuse images so it makes better sense.

I will be providing some example databases on possible uses for thumbnails/image tags etc so people can learn by example.
