The problem still comes back to IBM having a lack of vision when it comes to Notes as a product. Whilst it is so much more than an email client, that is not how it is marketed (or perceived by end users or companies). Of course, since Notes can be much more than an email client it is going to have a more complex UI than e.g. Apple's Mail.app. So many of the features of Notes are overkill when it is seen as an email client. The Notes client needed to be skinnable so that its UI could be stripped down to be just an email client. All that would have been required is that when Notes launched it checked an ini file to determine which menu options were visible, and to be able to launch directly into a specific db.
