Speed Awareness Course

Steve Castledine  August 12 2005 12:17:55 PM
On Wednesday I attended the Speed Awareness Course here in Leicester.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be  - about 20 "mostly guilty" looking people put in a room for 3 hours to listen and take part in discussing "Speed Awareness", consequences etc etc.

We were accepted as the "accidental speeders" and treated as such. You could only attend the course if you were doing 36 or 37 in a 30mph limit. Above that and the points and fine are yours.

It did drag on a bit towards the end, but I was a relieved man when it was over with. Afterwards I had a nice 125 mile drive to do - the day after another 250!

Now the question is..... how fast were you riding when you did your 125 ??

Well the majority was round the M25 - so with the variable speed limits I was very legal!

Does that mean on average you were legal, or you were always legal???? ;-)

I was good!

5Stephan H. Wissel  8/30/2005 12:23:09 PM GMT -6  Some math to consider

Our driving teacher did some math with us (sorry km/h only). The time to come to a full stop is approximatly your speed (in km/h) /10 * speed/10.

So when you do 50 km/h and in 25m the usual kid appears, you would manage to stop exactly in front of it. Now when you do 70 km/h you need 49-50m. So you will hit the kid.

Question: how fast will you be?

Answer: after 25m you need another 25m... and 25 you need when you do 50km. So you would hit the kid with 50km/h... Just imagine it would be yours.

My 2c

:-)

How did you get your offer of a speed awareness course instead of the points? Please help

If you live in the right county and you were in a 30 zone and doing no more than 36/37 and you have not been on a course before - then it is offered by default.

If it is not offered - you cannot get on it.
