Domino Blog Template - Who is posting comments in your organization and what pages are they reading?
Steve Castledine October 26 2006 01:45:00 PMIf your blog is open to anonymous access then most of this information will be of little relevance. However if you have authenticated users it shows how you can see who really is posting comments and also how to track user access.
Each comment added to the site has the ip address of the machine they post from recorded. This is whether the user is authenticated or not.
To view this ip address, navigate to the comment you wish to check. Goto the "Browser Variables" tab. You will see the ip addres field.
In the same image above you can also see recorded the authenticated user name. So even if someone puts another persons name in the author field you can see who the real author was.
Forcing the Author Name
You can take this one step further by forcing the authenticated users name into the authors field and disallowing the edit of that field.
There are two steps to this process, firstly the auto population of the authors field. Within the configuration document goto tabs "Discussion" - "Basic". There is a field "Precomplete Comment Form if authenticated". Save and close the document.
Next we need to edit the html so the field is visible but uneditable. So within the section "HTML Templates", goto "Block Templates". Edit the block template "Add Comment". Locate the author field it will look something like:
<input name="author" value="" size="51">
<input name="author" value="" size="51" disabled="true">
There are some side effects to using this - the "remember me" code will not work so it will not complete the email address etc.
Recording User Hits
Slightly related, but using the site hits template described here, you can also use the data recorded to publish statistics usage on individuals usage of your website.
If a person is authenticated each hit is stamped with the users name. At the bottom of each "hit document" there is a field "Remote User". Exporting this data to a spreadsheet or modifying the view design of this template can be very useful and you can see who is reading what, when and how many times etc.
